Richard Kinnon... Longreach QLD

I had to find a better cost effective way of feeding early weaned calves, herd sires that have to be brougt back up to speed for the coming season and my horse weaning and yearling preparation for marketing.I had been watching the progress of Fodder Solutions for the last 5 years. I was in a real corner.  My cows were slipping by the day and once again I had to pull calves off at 3 months old and nothing to put them on pasture wise.  We have always used pellets and other manufactured feeds but the turn around in the calves after being on the sprouts for three weeks was truly amazing.  The calves after a month were looking better than they were when first pulled off of their mum,s.  We are right in the middle of foaling all our mares also.  Other years I have had to feed prime lucerne to prevent constipation in the newborn foals and to boost nutrient in the lactating mares.  Putting them onto a small amount of fodder turned this into a tenth of the cost.  I can't thank Fodder Solutions enough for this great product.  Terry and Flavio (the owners of Fodder Solutions) have been there 100% to give after sales service.  Its great to buy a product that has had  enough important research done on it eg combating mould, drainage, and maintenance so as it works effectively and efficiently.  The after sales service was a real asset to us as everything was new to us.  There is absolutely no doubt that this product has made my operation a more viable one out here in the west.  It's like ordering your rain.  We once felt guilty feeding our riding horses because of the cost, but now at around 70 cents per day cost in fodder plus roughage which we normally have I can feed to my hearts content.  It's just like a flowing bore only its green feed not water. "Thanks Flavio and Terry .  We may be able to stay on and battle the odds a bit longer."

Lisette New ... Gatton  QLD

I have 7 horses to feed:  two young Warmblood geldings, two young Paint horse geldings, one Warmblood broodmare, one Quarter horse broodmare and an aged Shetland pony gelding.

I have lived in the Lockyer Valley for 6 years and my property has received minimal to ‘just enough’ rainfall in that time.  2007 saw the worst condition of my property with scarce grazing availability.  Buying enough hay and ‘hard feed’ to keep them hunger-free was an enormously expensive task, and frequently had to be rationed due to hay shortages.  It was very stressful keeping a routine quantity available and I worried about colic due to changes in hay quality from dusty mouldy hay, to prime lucerne which only produces scours in horses on dry paddocks.

Each horse was provided with an extruded feed appropriate to its age and development.  Foals were prepared on excellent pre-mix and as they progressed from weaning to yearlings the feeds were upgraded to provide for their appropriate growing requirements.  I had studied Feeding and Nutrition in Applied Equine Science and was certain that my horses were receiving adequate and appropriate nutrition through commercially available pre-mixed grain feeds..

I was spending between $600-$800 per fortnight during the peak of the 2007 drought. I had heard of the Fodder Solutions System and just assumed that it would be out of my reach financially.  It wasn’t until I saw a display unit at the 2008 Toowoomba Royal Show that I realised how affordable and cost-effective this system is.

My Fodder Solutions System has been in place for 3 months now and my horses are all completely on sprouts, taking about 10 days to accept the sprouts but now they can’t get their sprouts quickly enough each morning and evening!  I mix barley, sunflowers and lupins and feed ½ biscuit to each horse per feed, with the pony receiving a few handfuls from the other biscuits with this being quite sufficient for all of them.  The quality of the sprouts is the same week-in, week-out, I no longer have to worry about dusty feeds or weevils.

I would like to draw a comparison with this system to feeding hard feeds.  The Fodder System requires 1.2kg of seed per tray, which produces a matt of sprouts weighing between 8-10kg.  This biscuit is enough for one horse per day, and I feed half morning and night.  1.2kg of barley, sunflower seed and lupins costs approx 88 cents per horse per day, add electricity and water to run the Unit which rounds to about a dollar per horse per day.

The previous system involved feeding roughage and between 3-5kg hard feed per horse per day, at a cost averaging $30 per 25kg bag - $5 per horse per day.

All that I additionally require now is roughage – adequate pasture grass or grassy / barley hay for the stabled horses, so I no longer need to buy expensive lucerne hay.

Minimal maintenance!  Seeding up takes less than 10 minutes per day.  The unit does all the hard work as everything is automated.

I have had 2 horses stabled and prepared for the winter showing season but the other five have remained in paddocks.  To my amazement, every horse’s coat is positively gleaming, even dappling, which is normally only seen in their coats when prepared on the most expensive Show Preps!   The young horses’ body conditions were maintained and improving even though winter was quite harsh, the older horses have consistently maintained excellent body condition through-out winter.  But the most amazing difference has been the change in temperaments.  One 2 year-old has been an extremely challenging horse due to an accident and injury he sustained as a 9 month-old colt, which left him traumatised.  I decided to embark on a Show Season with this youngster to give him some exposure and experience, believing that an early and gentle introduction into competition would be of a psychological benefit.

He had 2 Shows ‘before sprouts’: nervous, arrogant and fidgety. ’After sprouts’ we still had 3 more Shows on our programme for him.   We were astounded at the complete turnaround of his attitude both at home, and out in public, he became so mellow and gentle, and took the Show scene with all its noise and drama with all the ease and aplomb of a seasoned professional, with Championships to his credit!  His nature is now pleasant which is testament to the cool energy available by feeding sprouts.

Results!  Cost-effective, consistently highly nutritious, palatable green feed available ALL YEAR ROUND.  If you want fantastic results – prepare your horses on barley sprouts!!!!

I was spending over $50 a day in feed  to feed my 18 horses now I can feed them for less than $5 a day and they are in much better condition as well. I cant believe it, its like having 30 acres of irrigated Lucerne paddock inside that little shed.

Trish and David Deakin... Rosewood QLD

Trish and Dave Deakin’s mixed farming property at Rosewood, 25 km west of Ipswich, runs on careful margins. And when they went looking for a reliable, inexpensive way to keep their goats – stud Boers and Anglo-Nubians – fed as they require the search ended at FodderSolutions.

“About five years ago I went looking for a system like this but couldn’t find on without problems. Goats are browsers – they actually prefer a variety of foods and need a variety to keep their rumens going. They have a very fast metabolism and need a higher turn over of nutrients. It is not true goats will thrive on just anything,” Trish says.

Trish likes her FodderSolutions system and says that they haven’t had any problems with it. A FodderSolutions system is a climate-controlled grain-germinating factory. Trays of seed go in one end and with the right conditions and watering sprout, then grow into lush mats of green shoots and matted roots, then slide out of the tray at the other end.

“With sprouts the nutrition is released from the seed.

“We use barely grain but are experimenting with adding in different types for the sprouts: garlic, fenugreek, sunflowers, to get the best levels of nutrients to keep the goats health and immunity up. Turning a grain to a sprout means the animals are getting the best of it. By the time the grain has become a sprout the grain is digestible. The animal has access to everything that was in the grain.

“The sprouts come out like a little mat. The dairy does get one-third of a mat per day. They are doing brilliantly. They look wonderful. The dairy goats don’t have a lot of room to move so this is almost all they eat.

“I’ve got does that were milking six litres a day on it. That is a very good amount for an animal that only weighs 60 kilograms. She’s milking 10 percent of her body weight per day.

“We bought a FodderSolutions machine about a year ago and five weeks later upgraded. Now we have the biggest one you can get. We are only a small property and we had to look at production costs and the fodder machine was a reliable, low cost option Using the sprouts we have cut down our feeding costs.

“We have to bring our whole enterprise in at a certain costing. This machine takes out all the variables. It has allowed us to not be influenced by fodder prices. It has given us the freedom to operate on steady costings. Everyday I take my 240 kg of feed out and I am happy.”

Kilto Park ... Caboolture QLD

Kilto Park located on the Sunshine Coast is one of Australia’s premium thoroughbred nurseries and training facilities. In September 2007, Fodder Solutions installed a custom built Fodder Machine capable of producing 750kg of fresh nutritious feed everyday. Since then they haven’t looked back, with all fourteen of their yearlings offered at the Brisbane Bloodstock Sales in February being prepared on sprouts! John Nott the manager of Kilto Park has a great deal of experience in the world of thoroughbreds and racing, he knows how important feed quality is when it comes to these elite athletes. Super headline Stallion “Ombra Della Sera” (by Brave Warrior from Pilgrim’s Angel) “comes running” when they are putting out the biscuits of sprouts. “To them the Ute with the biscuits is like a Mr Whippy van is to kids.”

Robbie Deans...Goondiwindi QLD

"If I didn't have that regular feed supply, I would not have an animal left on the place," said Mr Deans who invested in a portable sprouting system manufactured in Toowoomba by Fodder Solutions.

"It's just like having access to a fresh paddock of barley 52 weeks a year.  And the beauty is it takes just six days from seeding to feeding"  The self-contained unit can produce 240 kg of matted sprouts a day to feed stock on his 450 ha native pasture block on the outskirts of town.

"I used to buy semi-trainer loads of hay and put grain through a hammer mill to keep the stock going.  But there was just no money in it.  Now 10 tonnes of barley does me pretty much a whole year.  It's so much cheaper and the stock do really well."

Mr Deans said it took about one and a half hours a day to load out and re-seed the trays with fresh grain for sprouting. "I just throw it out on the ground and the stock come running.  They just love it."

He has a small herd of Santa Gertrudis cows to produce weaner steers for feedlots and a flock of Dorper Sheep for prime lamb. "I wasn't originally intending to feed sprouts to the sheep.  But it keeps the ewes in good condition and they milk really well.  This is good natural fattening country as long as we et the rain.  But the stock still come looking for the sprouts every day, even if there is plenty of feed in the paddock."

"The Sprouting system is so flexible.  We can shut it down if we are going away for a few days and match our production to the level of pasture availability"
